Born in Minnesota on September 22, 1952, Mike Watson studied art at San Diego State University, Grossmont College and Cuyamaca College. While attending Grossmont College, Watson was offered a job in the Instructional Media Center producing brochures, signs, and camera ready art for the faculty. This is where his college professors encouraged him to branch out into Fine Art and paint. Watson painted part-time while working at General Dynamics and later while working for the Postal Service. At age 56, Watson became a full-time artist while retired.
Watson traveled to art museums in England, Germany, Austria, Switzerland and France. While in Paris he visited Claude Monet’s home in Giverny and developed a love of impressionism from seeing this style in many museums.
Watson is a member of the Southwestern Artists Association and the San Diego Watercolor Society.
